So yeah the delay is annoying but I think the problem with the feature is feasibility. Like, how does the app know you went offline? Probably it just feels you online after some time went by without any interactions. That’s the delay you see. Bc if you don’t log out… how can the app tell you’re not using it anymore? Even if you could hook on an event when the user moved to another app, deeming then offline could be inaccurate and also would take some time to propagate to all other users. That assuming you update users status when they open your profile. For the grid, broadcasting “offline” events to every other user could be really challenging from a performance standpoint.
So… I think this is a great idea but it’s just probably not possible to implement. At least Grindr updates a few mins afterwards. Scruff keeps you’re green dot even after they know you’ve not used the app for half an hour or more.
