   Dear Grindr Safety Team,

   I would like to suggest some important safety features that could potentially protect users from serious crimes, including robbery, kidnapping, blackmail, physical assault, and other dangerous situations.

   I am a Grindr user, and I recently experienced a very frightening situation after meeting someone through the app. I connected with a person on Grindr, we exchanged Instagram accounts, and later made plans to meet. The person appeared trustworthy and friendly online. However, after meeting in person, the situation suddenly became dangerous.

   I was taken to an isolated area by the person and several other individuals. I was physically assaulted, threatened, and forced to provide access to my phone and financial accounts. They also attempted to create fake evidence against me and recorded material that could potentially be used for blackmail. I was threatened with serious physical harm if I contacted anyone or told anyone about what happened. Eventually, after money was demanded and paid, I was released.

   I am sharing this experience not to discuss the details of the incident, but because I believe dating applications can introduce stronger safety mechanisms that may help prevent similar situations for other users.

   Suggested Safety Features

   1. Continuous Safety Warnings

   Grindr should regularly display prominent safety reminders, especially when users are planning to meet someone for the first time.

   For example:

   «“Meeting someone from Grindr? Stay alert. Fake profiles and dangerous individuals may use dating apps to target people. Meet in a public place, tell someone you trust, and never ignore warning signs.”»

   These warnings could appear periodically rather than only once during account creation.

   1. Mandatory “Safety Check” When Meeting Someone

   When a user travels to meet someone at their location, Grindr could provide a simple safety check with three options:

   • 🟢 SAFE
   • 🟠 DOUBTFUL
   • 🔴 UNSAFE

   The user could select one privately.

   If the user selects DOUBTFUL, Grindr could immediately start additional safety measures without alerting the other person.

   If the user selects UNSAFE, the app could provide an emergency response option.

   1. Emergency Safety Button

   When a user is meeting someone for the first time, Grindr could provide an easily accessible emergency button.

   If the user doesn't respond within a certain period, the app could send an alert to their emergency contact, depending on the user's previously configured preferences.

   • Leaving immediately if something feels wrong

   Most Important Point

   Dating apps are often used by people who meet strangers for the first time. A person can appear completely normal through messages, photos, Instagram, or video calls and still turn out to be dangerous.

   Therefore, safety should not be treated as something users have to search for in the settings. It should be built directly into the meeting experience.

   A simple SAFE / DOUBTFUL / UNSAFE system, combined with a trusted contact, emergency code word, location sharing, and emergency response system, could potentially save lives.

   I strongly encourage Grindr to consider developing a dedicated “Meeting Safety Mode” for users.

   The goal is not to discourage people from meeting others. The goal is to make meeting someone from a dating app safer.

   I hope Grindr's safety team will seriously consider these suggestions and continue improving safety features for its users.
