Please restore ethnicity filter
I am Asian, and I would like to have the ethnicity filter option back. As a "minority", I don't think the filter option is racist. It offers me choices. Sometimes I want to search for Asians for example,, and if there is this option, it will make my search much easier to find.

I am Hott_maxx@yahoo.com… For some reason whenever I post a comment it appears as anonymous even though I try not to post it that way. I posted many comments on this thread most of which have to do with functionality and ease-of-use and keeping the app as true to form as possible. When I read all of these hypercharged comments about who is racist and who is not all I hear is judgment towards others. I don’t hear anything about making the app better and more functional for Gay members. Men looking for men. Men looking for people they’re actually attracted to. I’m a white guy looking for non-white guys usually. Sometimes I want to see white men, but most of the time I’m looking for somebody different. That means I go on the app and spend 15 to 20 minutes as I stated below just blocking white guys. You open the app and the first thing that pops up is white white white. I live in South Florida there are plenty of Hispanic Latin multicultural black brown people here. But when I open the app who pops up …white guys…and i’m a white guy. I just don’t want to sleep with another white guy most of the time. But sometimes I do. But I have made the choice that I will take a chance at blocking someone amazing who I will never see again who is white just so I can see some of the other profiles which I am usually MORE interested in… this is an excruciating exercise. Blocking blocking blocking …what a waste of time. If they do not reinstate the ethnicity filter I will cancel my upgraded membership and go back to using it as a free service. Because right now I’m just wasting time. And that’s what it’s all about for me, functionality, ease-of-use, and finding what we are looking for as gay men… it’s either a quick fuck app or find someone to have a date with app.. or something in between.. it’s whatever you want it to be. And the ethnicity filter just makes it better. RETURN THE FILTER SO WE CAN PUT ALL THIS HYPER RACIST CHAT TO BED. Sign sealed delivered I’m yours!!!!!

Filters are inherently discriminatory, and that’s OK when the intent is not hateful or malicious. Oxford English Dictionary defines discriminate: (verb) 1. recognize a distinction; differentiate. "babies can discriminate between different facial expressions of emotion". The word has no hateful or malicious meaning but many of you fail to understand that, and many of you understand the word incorrectly. To discriminate on Grindr is to use Grindr. Everyone is discriminated by all of the other “filters” which should be called “discrimination ranges” or “exclusion categories”. And the people who don’t respond to messages can be perceived as discriminating for one reason or another, even when a user may inadvertently overlook a received message. The inability to not take things personally is shocking. I support the ethnicity filter and I have wanted it back since the moment it was removed. It is normal to find a person attractive based on a range of physical and mental/emotional characteristics and traits. Anyone who claims otherwise is delusional. It is not “racist” for a person to not be sexually attracted to another person who is of a different race. And if a person is not attracted to an entire race of people that’s OK too, because it’s not hateful or malicious (if it is then of course that is racist). If you know what you like you know what you like. You cannot tell another person they are wrong for liking what they like and justify that because it’s race or ethnic based, but when you discriminate against tops or bottoms as a group that’s totally fine. Get real. We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto. And you’re not post-racial.

I love the people that keep commenting saying things like "The majority of people that want the filter back are white people trying to filter out POC"... you do realize that statement is full of racism? You're assuming the majority are white and you're assuming they're filtering OUT POC. Yet they also say that the POC trying to find POC only are allowed to do so..?? Like I will actually quote what Anonymous said 3 comments before this:
"Some of these comments here are coming from POC member who can't find other POC which is valid BUT the minority." So if you're POC you're allowed to filter out other people. However, if you're white you're not allowed because suddenly THAT is racist? Seriously, what are you people trying to argue exactly?
Also, if you go through the comments here the majority are actually white people wanting to filter out people to find people of other races.. like I, as a white guy, would generally like to find an asian guy. Why? I'm attracted to how they look. That's not racist whatsoever. I could be attracted to a white guy for how they look and suddenly it's not considered racist by anyone at all.
Now, to get back to the topic at hand, the reason this is all talk about what is and isn't racist is that's literally what Grindr's response was. They took out the ethnicity filter because of the people suddenly demanding that it's racist. Many other sites did it as well and I know a few left it up to user vote. Recon had it as a discussion and vote to see if people wanted the filter to stay or not and it ended up staying. The filter itself is not racist - it's idiots that use it and just getting rid of it doesn't stop anything except honestly give into it. Saying that because some people are racist suddenly we're all not allowed to have choice unless it's the "right" choice.
The way some of these people claiming the filter is racist are talking it's like they're even against interracial couples. None of it makes any sense.. they argue against the filter saying it's racist but show blatant racism in the same breath. The other hilarious thing is that a majority of the time it's "Anonymous" that's against the filter and it's people with actual names that are for it. Almost like the "Anonymous" people know they're wrong and can't show themselves.
In the end, the filter needs to be reinstated as it's not racist whatsoever. The people claiming it is racist can just move on and make their own SJW catered app and watch how it crashes and burns.

All of these comments and conversations about what’s racist and what is not racist is very interesting and a great social conversation however it has nothing to do with whether or not the ethnicity filter should be reinstated. The Ethnicity filter most certainly should be reinstated. I just spent 15 minutes on grindr blocking people that I will literally never see again simply because of how they look. All different shapes sizes hair colors and races. Wouldn’t it be so much easier just to be able to find who I’m interested in and talk to them. And then when I want to see the broad range of everybody I can turn the filter off. But now I just blocked all these people that I will never see again. To me that’s a much harsher way to deal with how to find people I’m interested in. The ethnicity filter is an excellent tool there’s nothing racist about it taken as a simple tool to find someone. What ever someone’s individual motivations is completely on them and nothing to do with the app or the feature itself. Sometimes I’m looking for white sometimes I’m looking for Asian sometimes I’m looking for black sometimes I’m looking for brown sometimes I’m looking for Hispanic or Latino. Why do I have to block all these other people just to try and find those I’m looking for. It’s not racist to have an ethnicity filter. Now all the other comments are great conversation as I said when it comes to social commentary. And what any one person‘s individual motivations are are on that person and have nothing to do with an ethnicity filter. Si let’s please keep it simple folks 15-20 minutes of just blocking guys and not talking to or seeing them online ever again that’s just ridiculous ..RESTORE THE ETHNICITY FILTER NOW just for basic ease-of-use and functionality of what used to be an excellent gay dating app.

I actually like this feature. Gay guys are rude racist and bullies. grindr 5 years ago was foul. profile captions were so nasty with blatant racist. Things like "I don't like Rice nor spice" was accepted.
I think this feature was a good idea. Some of these comments here are coming from POC member who can't find other POC which is valid BUT the minority.
THE MAJORITY of these comments is white people wanting to filter out people of color.
So keep it. We cannot live in a fake filtered world. Get over it. People of color exist...just get used it.

The only reason me and many other people I know purchase the XTRA or Unlimited features was because of the ethnicity feature.
The reason behind this is that when you’re considered a minority, and you live in a huge city like New York, London or Paris, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to meet people from your same ethnicity. I know so many Asian guys who only prefer Asians, Black men who only prefer other black men, Arab guys who only prefer other Arabs, Latinos, Middle Easterns, the list goes on.
It’s really been a lengthy and frustrating experience for me without this filter as it’s just a matter of preference. I do not see anything racist about having that filter, in fact it’s the OPPOSITE! It prevents guys from telling other guys:” Sorry I’m not into X ethnicity” which can be really hurtful.
So I please ask you to reconsider this feature so we can go back to enjoying the app and it’s features.
Best,
Jacob -

@Anonymous Oh god, people like you that go "You don't get to tell people what they deem racist/hurtful to them."... So if someone's say using Grindr to find people and do malicious things, I can't deem that hurtful to them? Sure it's an extreme, but that's what you're saying here.
Racism is simple it's people like you that are racist. Your entire argument here is you telling me not to do something you literally do in the same reply. If I can't tell someone how to feel, you can't tell me how to feel. If I can't lecture you, you can't lecture me.
It's also always hilarious to me that people like you will go "Unless you're (insert race) you'll never understand!" instead of actually trying to get people to understand. Why is this? I know the answer; it's because you yourself don't even know what you're arguing so you use cop outs. It's you with the "basic and limited understanding of the topic."
Saying you're only attracted to men, is that sexist? Saying you're only attracted to women, is that sexist? Saying you're attracted to younger guys, is that ageist? Just because I'm not attracted to women doesn't mean I'm sexist and can't be around them, can't stand them, etc. Just because I'm not attracted to older guys doesn't mean suddenly I'm ageist and can't stand older people. I can be friends with them all but there is no sexual attraction whatsoever. Yet somehow you say just because you're attracted to someone based on their race (and skin tone is only a small part of that) is suddenly racist. I think you need to learn the actual definition of racism so I'll post it here:
Racism - prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
Is there prejudice from sexual attraction? In otherwords, injury or damage resulting from it? No. Is there discrimination? No. Is there antagonism? No. It's literally a positive thing that you're attracted to someone and yet you still act like it's racism even though not a single bit fits the definition of racism.
Also, funny that you call me fragile when you're the one that can't stand someone actually likes you for something. Something you suddenly deem inappropriate for reasons you can't even explain yourself. You're also fragile since you're the one inserting things like racism where they don't belong purely because you NEED something to argue. Then when someone uses logic and fact against you, you turn into an emotional wreck and hope that "wins" you the argument by them not replying.
Having a filter is NOT racism. If it is going to be considered racism, then no filter should exist whatsoever. We shouldn't be allowed to say we're straight, gay, lesbian, etc. By your definition that's all an -ism of some kind. By your definition by me being gay I'm sexist. By me liking people of my own age I'm ageist. By your own definition we shouldn't be allowed to say what we're attracted to and should be forced into being attracted to every single person because anything else is "wrong." Like I said, your argument makes no sense and you know it doesn't.

@Eventide it's not that simple and you don't get to tell people what they deem racist/ hurtful to them or not above all what. Stay in your lane instead of lecturing people. There's been a hyper-sexualisation of black bodies since...forever and if you're not Black yourself, you have no idea what type of weird, sick and racist disguised as interest or attention we receive daily. So keep your very basic and limited understanding of the topic to yourself. No one said someone who happens to be attracted to black men smong others was racist, but the way you put it you contradict yourself because you say singling out someone because you say "saying I LOVE BLACK MEN" is not racist when it's actually singling out someone based on race. I actually hate when someone messages me and says that, I'm like do you need a medal for liking Black men? Who cares if you like Black, yellow or blue men? It's 2021ny skin tone is part of me but I'm more than that. Keep your reversed psychology and your fragility to yourself before judging who's racist or not, as this person may have had too many bad experiences hence decided to stick to Black men. I, personally would be tempted to do the same to avoid the cringe interactions,if only 95% of my area wasn't white. You clearly don't know what you're talking about so refrain from lecturing others. Things are much more complex and gays are often the most racist, they'll sleep with Black men but won't date one.

I wasn’t able to put my user name when I made this comment and I started a new thread I just feel Grindr is not paying attention. It’s quite frustrating and I will end my subscription and not renew unless they change the filter I just spent 15 minutes blocking people just to get to two people I was interested in. It used to be so much easier. Enough already.

I am a Native American. We are already underrepresented everywhere. I would like to see the ethnicity filter back so that I can find other Native men easily. It would be nice to be able to find other dudes that share cultural commonality.

@Henrique, It's not even "hypersexualize black bodies" that makes it racist.. To find someone sexually appealing isn't racist. That'd be like a white guy saying "I LOVE BLACK GUYS" and you calling him racist over it.. that makes no sense. Sexual preference is not racism in any way whatsoever.
Singling someone out purely based on their race is racism. Like saying obviously the smartest kid is the asian. Or saying the black guy is more likely to be a criminal. Those things a racist.. not being white and saying you're only really attracted to black guys.
If you do want to say that's racist, then you're racist because you yourself said you're not interested in even talking to white people.

There are other threads on this topic but I am starting a new one because Grindr is so tone deaf. Ethnicity filter is absolutely essential to find guys close to you that you were actually attracted to. I go on grinder I spent all my time blocking blocking blocking. And I pay A premium for more services. Now I’m feeling it’s all a waste. Restore the filter restore the filter restore the filter.

I’am black and not really interested in talking mostly to white people and thats whats happening since the filter has been taken off. The racial filter is not racists itself, the problem is that ones who uses these funcnionality to hipersexualise black bodies.

All I see here is that Grindr doesn't really care for its users' needs. Grindr be like: 'Dear user, it's not that we need you, but the other way around. So we can do whatever we want. Even enforce our new social rules. Take it or leave it.' And the world ended. For Grindr.

So because a few people got their feelings hurt that no one was messaging them, ya’ll decide to remove the filter. I prefer middle eastern guys. I am middle eastern. Before I used to see them all the time, now I see 2-3 of them max. Very disappointed and will be terminating my Grindr unlimited this month!
