Travel Incognito" or "Wander Mode" Travel Privacy Mode"
I would like to propose a new privacy feature for Grindr that addresses a major pain point for users who travel. Currently, many users maintain a highly discreet profile in their hometown (often without a face photo) for professional or personal privacy reasons. However, when traveling, they feel safer or more comfortable uploading a face photo.
The Problem
The issue is that any user who has an active chat history with the traveler, or who has added them to their "Favorites" back home, can instantly see these profile updates. This risk of exposure prevents many users from fully utilizing the app or updating their profiles while away, out of fear that people in their hometown will see their new photos.
Countering the Alternative:
One might argue that users could simply log out and create a second, alternative profile for travel. However, this is a poor user experience. It forces users to upload photos and recreate bios from scratch, and more importantly, it requires them to either lose their paid subscription benefits or pay for a second subscription. This friction discourages app usage entirely.
The Solution: "Travel Privacy Mode"
I propose a feature that acts like "private browsing" for travel. When activated within the same account:
Profile Split: Users can upload a "Travel Profile" (e.g., with a face photo) that is only visible to new grids/users in their current physical location.
Hometown Freeze: To anyone back home with an existing chat history or who has the user favorited, the profile remains unchanged (showing the old photo, old bio, or appearing offline).
Seamless Transition: Once the user returns home or turns off the mode, the travel photos are safely hidden/removed, and the profile reverts to its standard discreet state.
Why This Matters for Grindr
1. Increased User Engagement: Users who currently stay offline or remain "faceless" while traveling will feel secure enough to upload photos and interact more freely.
2. Subscription Value: Instead of forcing users to split their experience across two accounts (and abandoning their premium features), this adds massive value to a single, main subscription.
3. Safety & Privacy: It aligns perfectly with Grindr’s commitment to user privacy, protecting individuals from accidental "outing" or privacy breaches by acquaintances in their home city.
Thank you for considering this proposal to make the app safer and more flexible for the community. I would love to see this implemented!
