I agree with those who say this is a bad idea because
    1. If you’re worried about this Grindr already allows all users to hide their precise location by hiding distance information. The position on the grid isn’t enough to locate someone.
    2. Enabling (which would be tantamount to encouraging) lying is never a good idea on any grounds except perhaps in the most extreme life or death circumstances eg witness protection programmes. If users have that level of imminent fear then spoofing location won’t be enough and they would be best advised to delete the app unfortunately
    3. In particular making spoofing easier would increase rather than reduce the problems and the fake accounts. As some have noted it’s already sadly possible on some mobile devices. That’s not something to encourage because it’s those people who scam and deceive and who undermine trust. Let’s not follow that example.

Yes, it’s a risk owning up to an aspect of your identity that you fear people will disown you for. It’s the risk we take on coming out. If you’re not ready or able to come out I understand. It takes most of us a bit of time to decide it’s what we want to do. But don’t try to make the rest of us have even more reasons to distrust. It just spoils the reputation of people who’ve done nothing wrong if we are a place of people who lie and deceive. It’s an act of cowardice and I do realise some countries have legal systems that are a threat and I have visited and lived in some of them and yes using an app like this there is frankly a bit more of a challenge but it’s not a reason to encourage everyone to give false information.

As a more general point, I agree with the suggestion another respondent to this idea made that there should be a down vote button not just a vote button against all suggestions. This is standard practice on most similar discussion boards online nowadays.

For the avoidance of doubt, I haven’t clicked the vote button for the idea of enabling spoof position reporting. If I could I would click a button to indicate that I actively reject it.

Many users who don’t agree with a suggestion won’t take the time to write a response to express this. Their opinion therefore will be missed. The responses therefore do not give as insightful or an accurate representation of the views of those responding to the suggestions.
