Subject: Partnership Proposal for the Preservation and Promotion of Madame Satã’s Legacy
Dear [Recipient’s Name],
My name is Baltazar de Almeida, and I am an activist for LGBTQIA+ rights in Brazil. I am currently leading an initiative to preserve and honor the legacy of Madame Satã, a historical figure of great significance to Black and LGBTQIA+ communities in the country.
About Madame Satã and His Legacy
Born João Francisco dos Santos in 1900, Madame Satã became an icon of resistance and art in Rio de Janeiro’s bohemian nightlife. As a Black, Northeastern, openly gay man, he defied social norms through transformist performances, capoeira skills, and a fearless attitude. After facing numerous adversities and spending 27 years in prison—many of them in Cândido Mendes Prison in Dois Rios, Ilha Grande—he chose to spend his final years in Vila do Abraão, where his tomb remains a symbol of struggle, resistance, and identity.
Our Initiatives
To honor and keep Madame Satã’s legacy alive, we are developing several initiatives:
• Tombstone Heritage Protection: We have initiated the official heritage protection process with IPHAN (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage) to recognize Madame Satã’s tomb, located in the Cemetery of Vila do Abraão, Ilha Grande, as a cultural landmark. This initiative has already received support from organizations such as the National LGBTQIA+ Alliance and Museu Bajubá.
• “Madame Satã Forever” Tour: We are developing a queer Afro-tourism cultural itinerary in Abraão, mapping historical and cultural sites linked to Madame Satã’s life.
• Graffiti Murals: We aim to create murals in Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande to celebrate Madame Satã’s figure, contributing to urban art and historical memory preservation.
• Traveling Exhibition: We are organizing a traveling exhibition to showcase Madame Satã’s life, impact on Brazilian culture, and role as a symbol of social resistance.
Request for Support and Partnership
Recognizing Grindr’s reach and relevance within the LGBTQIA+ community, we would like to propose a partnership to help expand and materialize these initiatives. Specifically, we seek:
• Visibility & Engagement: Utilizing Grindr’s platform to inform and engage users about our initiatives, especially those visiting Ilha Grande—a globally known LGBTQIA+ travel destination, as indicated by the app’s own data.
• Financial or Logistical Support: Assistance with the implementation of the murals, the traveling exhibition, and the historical tour.
• Collaborative Educational Content: Co-developing materials that highlight Madame Satã’s story and his cultural significance.
We strongly believe that, with Grindr’s support, we can significantly increase the reach of this initiative and reinforce the preservation of a cultural heritage that represents Brazil’s fight for diversity and equality.
I truly appreciate your time and consideration and look forward to the opportunity to discuss the details of this partnership further. Please let me know a convenient time for a meeting.
Best regards,
Baltazar de Almeida
