There's nothing wrong with taps. When someone nods at you and smiles at a bar or event and waits to see whether the greeting is returned before proceeding, do you berate or ignore that person for having the gall not to march right up to your face and launch into the beginning of a conversation? It's funny that on Scruff I never see anyone criticize real people for woofing.

HOWEVER the problem on Grindr is that, as others have noted, the overwhelming majority of taps are fake anyway. Why Grindr can't control the spam/scams (an endless stream of profiles featuring the phrase "for the rest of my life") when Scruff has these well under control is mystifying. Giving their failure to do so, they should let us block taps. And I see this idea was floated a year ago, but they haven't implemented it yet.

The tap feature is a passive aggressive joke..should be a way to end that feature on your profile

The main problems with taps on Grindr (which I rarely see anyone mention) is that 99% of them are from bots/fake accounts! This is what most people don't understand/get or they are failing to realize this. I get "Woofs" all the time on Scruff or "Growls" all the time on Growlr but they are not coming from fake accounts or bots, they are actually REAL people! That is why this feature on Grindr needs to either GO, or give everyone the option to disable it via their account settings if they wish to do so!

The service is getting to be unusable because of all the spam and most of that is thru the tap "feature". It needs to be removed or at least give people the ability to disable it. Though it looks like this was first started a year ago and nothing has been done yet, so I don't expect it to happen anytime soon. Guess I'll be switching to Scruff, where they don't have stupid features that help spammers.

It's pointless. If your tap is ignored you have no idea whether the guy is ignoring you or just has the phone in his pocket. It was better when you had to say "Hi", at least you knew if the message was read or not (Xtra).
Also, no tap feature would mean you have to say "hi".
The tap feature was a nice idea, but it didn't work.

Seeing a dramatic increase in spam taps and unable to report them too

Like many others taps are like marmite you either like or not like. I'm a not like so to please both like and not like there should be a disable taps option which when activated stops anyone sending a tap.

Taps should be optional and I agree with the op. Taps are being used as harrassment i.e. Tops tapping Tops, Being tapped by somone who flaked on you. Tapping a profile who clearly states no tapping. All these thing present a hostile environment which Grindr needs to adress, not alone the rampant meth and underage users.
