    Better yet, add an option for people to mark themselves as online/offline.

    If they are online then they can chose if they are available (green) busy (red) or unavailable (offline -blank). That way people know whether or not to contact them.

    Sometimes I log in and I'm just checking messages. So I'm not really available to chat with folks ( I'd mark myself as unavailable or busy). Or if I was about to start driving somewhere, I'd mark myself as busy until I got where I was going. Then when I was free I'd turn it green when I was up for conversation.
