Profiles often encode drug-use for methamphetamine and promote it by using terms such as “party, parTy, Tina, Ice, Crystal, etc.” Not only does this invade the LGBTQ+ culture, but it’s robust on Grindr to where it seems uncontrolled, a stronger mechanism for removing this type of material can be introduced by streamlining the reporting of a profile for meth use, such as an icon near the “tap” and “message” buttons to where it allows the user to report the promotion/invitation of illicit substance use. Due to the nature of people encoding symbols for drug use, one way to reduce these profiles is by gathering data from multiple reports, it may be as easy as a click (such as the Facebook like bottom) to encourage users to get involved. After so many reports, the profile may be subject for investigation by internal review, to which a decision is made to remove the profile. Ironically, meth use is highly promoted on this platform with personal information and images of the person promoting the drug, but this behavior is absent on other social platforms. This needs to stop, at the best least be mediated and controlled by Grindr’s algorithms.
